WhatsApp starts charging for messages that are free today: what changes for your SMB
If your SMB serves customers over WhatsApp, there are a couple of dates worth writing down before they show up on your bill. Meta announced it will start charging for messages that cost you nothing until now. It’s not the end of the world, but it is a real change worth understanding well — above all to avoid the expensive mistake many will make without noticing.
Let’s take it step by step, no smoke.
What changes, and when
First, a simple concept. When a customer messages you on WhatsApp, a 24-hour service window opens in which you can reply. Until now, a good chunk of those replies are free. That’s what starts to change, in two stages:
As of August 1, 2026. Messages generated by Meta’s own AI assistant (the so-called Meta Business Agent) start being charged. Billing is by consumption — on the order of US$2 per million tokens — which in practice works out to about 4 to 5 US cents per message.
As of October 1, 2026. Here’s the big one. All replies within that 24-hour window that don’t use a template start being charged: those written by a person on your team or by a third-party AI (what Meta calls service messages), which had been free since November 2024. On the same date, utility templates — like an appointment or order confirmation — start being charged when sent within the window; they’d been free since July 2025.
Anything still free? Yes: the 72-hour window that opens when a customer arrives from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad (the “entry point”) stays free of delivery charges. If you run campaigns that push people to message you, that door is still open with no toll.
And a note of honesty, because it matters: the exact rates for Chile are not published yet. Meta said it will announce them before September 1, 2026. So if someone promises you the final number on your bill today, they’re selling smoke. What we can do is get organized before it arrives.
Why this hits SMBs harder
There are two things worth separating here, because they get confused all the time.
The first is an uncomfortable truth: this charge is Meta’s, for delivering the message, and it applies to everyone. No tool — not even the most open source one in the world — can dodge it. If someone tells you their solution “saves you the WhatsApp charges,” be suspicious: that’s false, and right off the bat they’re promising something they can’t deliver. The cost per message will rise evenly for everyone.
The second is the avoidable mistake, and it’s the expensive one. The problem isn’t Meta’s charge. The problem is stacking pricey software on top of a cost that’s already going up. Many SMBs end up paying triple without noticing:
- The message, to Meta.
- A monthly subscription per seat or agent of a proprietary messaging inbox.
- Another subscription, separately, for the CRM where they keep their customers.
The first cost rises the same for everyone. The other two are optional, and they’re exactly where the money leaks without the customer noticing any difference. Put simply: the message costs the same for everyone; what sets you apart is how much software toll you pile on top.
How we solve it
Our play has two moves, and neither depends on dodging Meta.
Move 1: bring the cost per message down to the minimum. Most of an SMB’s conversations are simple — hours, prices, “do you have stock?”, “how do I get there?”. A well-configured in-house AI is more than enough for that, and it falls into the cheapest billing tier. To size it up, it helps to look at the comparison Meta itself published (with reference data from the Brazilian market — these are not Chile’s rates): a low-complexity third-party AI runs around 2–3 cents per message, a high-complexity one 9–10, and Meta’s own agent 4–5. The takeaway is clear: if you let AI handle the simple stuff — which is almost everything — you stay in the cheapest tier, and reserve people for what truly needs them.
Move 2: remove the software toll. This is where the stack we work with comes in, built on open source tools:
- WhatsApp Business (official API): the formal channel, the same one everyone uses. It’s the part you do pay Meta for, and there’s no way around it.
- Chatwoot: the inbox where your team — and your AI — reply. Being open source, you don’t pay a subscription for every agent you add.
- TwentyCRM: your CRM, with your contacts and history stored on your own infrastructure.
The message still costs whatever Meta charges. What disappears is the pile of subscriptions you used to stack on top.
The advantage no one values until they lose it
There’s a benefit to this approach almost no one looks at until it’s too late: control of your data. Let me tell it with a scene that repeats in SMBs with a sales team.
Your salespeople serve customers over WhatsApp, each from their own phone. Everything works fine… until one of them leaves. And with them go the contacts, the conversations, and the history of every customer they handled. Months of relationship stored on a phone that’s no longer yours. It’s no one’s ill intent: it’s that this asset — your relationship with your customers — was never really in the company’s hands.
With your own inbox built on open source tools, that information lives in the company: every conversation and every contact is backed up and yours. If a salesperson resigns, their replacement opens the chat and picks up where it was left. Nobody takes anything. And if one day you want to switch tools, your history goes with you — it isn’t held hostage on a third party’s server.
It’s not a technicality. It’s the difference between renting your relationship with customers and owning it.
In short
Meta’s change is coming and can’t be avoided, so there’s no point losing sleep over the cents per message. What is in your control is not overpaying for everything on top, letting AI handle the simple stuff, and staying the owner of your data.
